Radiator Transmission Cooler Systems – Explanation

Transmission systems are very important parts of our cars and other vehicles. There are also other supporting systems to transmission systems. One of these systems is the radiator transmission cooler application. Here, we will give information about the radiator transmission cooler applications that you can use for different kinds of systems.

What is Radiator Transmission Cooler System?

Radiator transmission cooler system.

As you understand from its name, the main purpose of this system is cooling the transmission systems of cars. We use these systems in different kinds of applications where the temperature rise in the transmission systems of cars.

In different kinds of automotive systems, temperature rise can be a problematic issue. Around the systems;

  • Heavy Load Applications: While towing heavy loads, the load on the transmission is very high. And transmission will work much higher revolutions and higher loads. So heat rise can be a problematic issue for these applications.
  • Hot Days: While you are driving your car on hot days or in summer, the heat rise can be a problematic issue for the transmission system.
  • Ston and Go Traffic: Also, you will use lower shifts while driving in stop-and-go traffic conditions. And the use of the transmöission is very high. So the heat rise will be a problem in this kind of conditions.
  • Rough Road: You can do off-road applications or drive through a rough road with your car. This can cause heat rise in transmissions.

So, we use radiator transmission cooler applications in these cases.

If we take a look at the general working principle, there is a small radiator that belongs to the transmission cooler system. And there is a fluid circulation around the transmission that it cooling the general system. This is the general working principle.

Types of Radiator Transmission Cooler Systems

There are different kinds of transmission cooler systems that we are using in automotive applications. These constructions are generally of three types.

  • Tube and Fin: This construction is the most common one that we are using in general car applications. The transmission cooling fluid pass through a set of tubes. These tubes are acting as turbulators to increase the turbulence of the flowing fluid. So, with the increasing turbulence, the heat transfer increases. The flowing wind through the tubes and fins dissipates the heat inside the fluid.
  • Plate and Fin: Instead of tubes, there are plate systems that the fluid passes through them. So the plate application increases the total area that contacts the outer air making it much easier to cool down.
  • Stacked Plate: This is the most efficient and better cooling application for most transmission fluids. The stacked plate design provides much more hşigher tubulation for the transmission fluid. And there is much higher airflow. So, the cooling is much more efficient than the other systems. But the use of these systems is not common like the other ones.

Conclusion

These are the general points that we can state about the radiator transmission cooler systems. If you have additional comments and questions about this topic, please leave them below.
