Hillside Washer – Explanation and Types

There are different kinds of parts and fasteners that we are using for mechanical design applications. One of these applications is the hillside washer. They are not common types of washers that we see in the market in general. Here, we explain what is hillside washer and what are their duties.

What is Hillside Washer?

A Hillside washer is a common structure washer application in truss structures. The top side of these elements is round. And there is a hole that goes through the washer structure. And the bottom side is flat we attach them to the truss structures on the flat side. The hole in the washer and the hole on the structural member come into contact with each other. And we can pass a rod through these holes. After that, we attach a bolt and nut to the edge of the rod that comes to the round side of the washer. So, the other end of the rod can freely rotate. You can attach the other end to the other truss structures.

So they are very useful in the attachment of the truss rods and truss structures in general.

Hillside Washer Types

There are different types of hillside washer applications in the market. These are the most common types that you can encounter.

  • Cross-Bracing Washers: These are the most common type of them. They have a round top and you can directly attach the rod or other kinds of the stick through this hole. The bottom side is flat in general.
  •  Flanged Hillside Washers: Also, at the bottom sides of the hillside washer systems, there is an extra flange. This provides extra mechanical stability to the assembly. This flange structure spreads the load to the ground. So they are better in the high load applications in general.
  •  Leveling Washers: These are the types that we are using in the I-beam structures in general. They have a bevel that fits inside the I-beam’s flange to provide an extra bearing surface for the structures.

Materials and Finishes that You Can Find in Market

There are different kinds of materials and finishes that you can find in the market. So, it will be very easy for you to find the correct one for your different applications.

  • Galvanized: Galvanize parts are so common to the different sellers. Galvanized parts are generally better in corrosive media. If you will us these washers in a corrosive environment, you need to check the galvanized ones.
  •  Cast Iron: Most of the washers are generally made from cast iron material. Cast iron is a very good structural material that has a very high toughness for static loads. The galvanized coating is generally applied to the cast iron parts.
  •  Black Oxide Iron: This is a special finish that provides very good corrosion resistance in a dry environment.
  •  Hot-Dipped Galvanized: These washers perform best in a wet corrosive environment.
  •  Aluminum: They are lightweight, and they are not suitable for high-load applications.
  •  Stainless Steel: They are the best for structural applications. And also they are rust resistant.
  •  Zinc Plated Steel: For corrosion resistance in wet environments for the steel hillside washers.

Conclusion

This is general information about the hillside washer systems. They are very common and unknown parts of structural systems in general. If you have additional questions, you can leave them below!
